MY STORY

I have been making art for as long as I can remember but after graduating with a degree in chemistry I followed a path which lead to designing software for pharmaceutical research scientists. I enjoyed my job, but the urge to pursue my own creativity continued to grow…

My biggest step was to leave this successful career to embark on a fine art degree in my mid-thirties. It soon became apparent that the journey wasn’t going to be plain sailing, and during my degree course I did a lot of crazy commuting between Gothenburg and Loughborough! The next decade was tough, but I continued to develop my art practice alongside part-time employment, exhibiting as much as possible and making valuable connections with other artists.

Now a full-time artist, I work from my home studio and teach printmaking workshops across the region. It has taken a long time to get to this point but I truly appreciate the lifestyle I have chosen, and am grateful for those who encourage and support me.

MY PROCESS

I am particularly interested in how painting and printmaking can inform one another, and how these two techniques can be used together.

I often begin by responding to a subject through printmaking, identifying relevant shapes, negative spaces, colours or lines. Gradually ideas for a composition develop. Selecting from these printed resources I layer papers onto a solid support, integrating painted passages as required. The finished work is sealed and varnished, resulting in a contemporary piece that does not require glazing.
For a recent exhibition looking at Leicester’s industrial heritage I took inspiration from the vintage typewriters once made in the city.
